Object Description |
Sample is a partially complete skeleton of Ichthyosaurus communis, consisting of skeletal material embedded in gray shale that has been stabilized with a smooth white infilling (plaster) and a dark wooden frame. The skull is disarticulated with the maxilla surround on either side by each half of the dentary. Several teeth are disarticulated and are preserved in the surrounding matrix. None of the flippers are preserved, however both forearm bones are present. At least 37 vertebrae are articulated, and 8 additional vertebrae are present in small groups at the posterior end. Four screws are apparent. Two belemnite guards are also present: one near the tip of the rostrum, the other adjacent to the right dentary. |
