Object Description |
This quilt was made by Ella Stewart (1856-1936) when she was 12 years old. The fabrics may have been purchased from Y. P. Withers in Fort Mill on March 14, 1868 for one dollar (see Quilt History Project documentation for receipts). The piece is hand-quilted; it is pieced with applique and contains cotton batting with seed. The field (white/cream in color) is composed of a 3x3 grid (9 total blocks). The pattern of each block consists of a feather wreath design; in each corner of the block is a stemmed red rose with two leaves attached to the base of the stems. The wreath element has five green "feather" shapes (extended "teardrop" shapes) crowning the top and bottom of the wreath as well as the left and right. Connecting each feather element are curved yellow bands with diamonds within. The border of the entire quilt is red with a thin white band on the outermost edge. There are two tags on the back corner of the quilt: one from Ella Stewart and one from the Quilt History Project. The first tag reads "Ella Stewart" (handwritten, black ink) and is sewn onto the quilt. The second tag reads "McKISSICK MUSEUMS/ UNIV. OF SOUTH CAROLINA/ COLUMBIA, SC/ SOUTH CAROLINA STATE MUSEUM/ COLUMBIA, SC/ SOUTH CAROLINA QUILT/ HISTORY PROJECT 1983-84" (typed black text). Below the information for the QHP, "YOR-6" has been handwritten in black ink. This tag is attached with a safety pin (as of 1.29.2021 the tag has been sewn onto the quilt). |
