Object Description |
This piece was excellently hand-quilted in a grid and scallop pattern by an unknown quiltmaker, probably between 1880 and 1900. This pattern may be a variation on the "Lady of the Lakes". The sawtooth pattern covers the entire quilt; triangle-shaped pieces are used to form "X" shapes. There are 25 total X's (4x5). Each X is created with triangles of alternating colors: cream and navy blue with white polka dots. The areas between the "arms" of each X are done in the same fabrics. The opposite sides of each X (left and right, and top and bottom) are the same color. All of the large white triangles (those that fill the spaces between the arms of the Xs) have scallops/fish scales/circles sewn into the fabric. The seams of this design is visible on the back as well. There is one tag sewn onto the back corner of the quilt. The tag reads "McKISSICK MUSEUMS/ UNIV. OF SOUTH CAROLINA/ COLUMBIA, SC/ SOUTH CAROLINA STATE MUSEUM/ COLUMBIA, SC/ SOUTH CAROLINA QUILT/ HISTORY PROJECT 1983-84" (typed black text). Below the information for the QHP, "YOR-11" has been handwritten in black ink. The initials "HA" are written on a back corner of the quilt. The initials are located along the width of the quilt, on the same side as the QHP tag. |
