He published papers on the Crustacea of the American coast and his comprehensive He published various papers on the crustacea of the American coast, and showed his knowledge of the subject by his revision in 1850 of the species in the various United States to which he added valuable notes and descriptions of new species. Lewis R. Gibbes An 1829 graduate of South Carolina College, Lewis Reeve Gibbes (1810-1894) was well connected to many prominent scientists in the United States and abroad during his long career, including John Edwards Holbrook, John Bachman, and Louis Agassiz. During the 1850s, Lewis Gibbes was a leading expert on American crabs, and he authored the first publications on South Carolina's marine algae. An avid collector of the natural world, he described his own cabinet of crustacea in 1850 as "the largest I believe at the South." Considered by many to have been South Carolina's most versatile scientist, Gibbes's generosity in sharing his discoveries and specimens with other scientists in the United States and abroad garnered such deep respect that many scientists named newly discovered species in his honor. While his interest in mineralogy is overshadowed by his other accomplishments, USC possesses a large selection of minerals collected by Lewis Gibbes. |
